Multiple antidepressive treatment methods are widely used in the clinic, but different patients showed considerable differences in response to the same treatment. The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) rs4680 polymorphism is involved in the antidepressive treatment reaction; however, the results in different studies are inconsistent. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis to explore the association of the COMT rs4680 polymorphism with the treatment response in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. An online search was performed through PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane library up to December 2018. The odds ratios (ORs), 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) and heterogeneity were calculated in four genetic models. Subgroup analysis and Galbraith plot were carried out to detect the potential source of heterogeneity. Sensitivity and publication bias analyses were performed to identify the reliability of the results. A total of 11 studies involving 2845 individuals were included in this meta-analysis. The results of the subgroup analysis indicated that patients who carried the G allele had remission or a better response to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in four genetic models. Excluding the studies that might lead to heterogeneity, overall ORs were recalculated, and no obvious association between rs4680 polymorphism and therapeutic reaction was detected in the allelic, recessive and additive models. In the dominant model, COMT rs4680 variants showed significant associations with antidepressive treatment, but the result was highly dependent on the individual study. In addition, the patients with the GG or AG + GG genotype in comparison to AA were associated with a better response to ECT treatment. However, due to the small number of studies using ECT treatment, we suggest that more research should be performed to verify this result.

Association between COMT gene Val108/158Met and antidepressive treatment response: A meta-analysis.

This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the factors that contribute to poor antibody response in organ transplant recipients after receiving the 2-dose severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine.
Data was obtained from Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM). Studies reporting factors associated with antibody responses to the 2-dose SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in solid organ transplant recipients were included in our study based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two researchers completed the literature search, screening, and data extraction. Randomized models were used to obtain results. Egger's test was performed to determine publication bias. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the stability of the result. The heterogeneity was determined using the Galbraith plot and subgroup analysis.
A total of 29 studies were included in the present study. The factors included living donor, BNT162b2, tacrolimus, cyclosporine, antimetabolite, mycophenolic acid (MPA) or mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), azathioprine, corticosteroids, high-dose corticosteroids, belatacept, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor, tritherapy, age, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), hemoglobin, and tacrolimus level were significantly different. Multivariate analysis showed significant differences in age, diabetes mellitus, MPA or MMF, high-dose corticosteroids, tritherapy, and eGFR.
The possible independent risk factors for negative antibody response in patients with organ transplants who received the 2-dose SARS-CoV-2 vaccine include age, diabetes mellitus, low eGFR, MPA or MMF, high-dose corticosteroids, and triple immunosuppression therapy. mTOR inhibitor can be a protective factor against weak antibody response.

Risk Factors for Weak Antibody Response of SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine in Adult Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Rice Bran Arabinoxylan Compound (RBAC) results from an enzymatic modification of rice bran, which is reported to have immunomodulatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects by regulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The current systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the hepatic adverse effects of RBAC by assessing the effect through liver enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST).
In the present study, the Medline (PubMed), Web of Sciences, and Scopus databases were searched for relevant publications from the beginning to October 2022. The meta-analysis was based on the Mixed effect model to generate the mean effect sizes in weighted mean differences (WMD) and the 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). The heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochrane Chi-squared test, and the analysis of Galbraith plots was applied.
Subgroup meta-analysis on five eligible randomized controlled trials (n = 239) showed a significant decrease in serum AST regarding RBAC supplementation in powder form (WMD (95%CI) = -3.52 (-5.62, -1.42) U/L; P-value = 0.001, I2 (%) = 46.9; P heterogeneity = 0.170), three months and more supplementation duration (WMD (95%CI) = -3.71 (-5.95, -1.48) U/L; P-value = 0.001, I2 (%) = 29.9; P heterogeneity = 0.240) and studies with a good quality (WMD (95%CI) = -3.52 (-5.62, -1.42) U/L; P-value = 0.001, I2 (%) = 46.9; P heterogeneity = 0.170).
In conclusion, RBAC supplementation seems to not have any hepatic adverse effects and its supplementation as powder or for three months and more may decrease serum AST levels. However, we need further studies to confirm the results.

Is there any hepatic impact associated with rice bran arabinoxylan compound supplementation? A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

In the past five years, a growing number of studies have tried to illustrate the association between the peripheral blood level of C-reactive protein (CRP) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). However, the results have been inconsistent. To assess whether abnormal CRP in peripheral blood was associated with ASD, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis.
A systematic literature search was performed using the Embase, PubMed, Web of Knowledge, PsycINFO, and Cochrane databases through August 27, 2019. Reference lists were also checked by hand-searching. Clinical studies exploring CRP concentration in the peripheral blood of autistic children and healthy controls were included in our meta-analysis. Overlapping samples were excluded. We pooled obtained data using a fixed- or random-effect model based on a heterogeneity test with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software and STATA software. Standardized mean differences were converted to Hedges' g statistic in order to obtain the effect size adjusted for sample size. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analyses, meta-regression, and publication bias tests were also undertaken.
Nine studies with 592 ASD children and 604 healthy children were included in our meta-analysis. Significantly elevated CRP levels in peripheral blood were found in ASD children compared with healthy controls (Hedges' g = 0.527, 95% CI: 0.224-0.830, p = 0.001). Subgroup analyses based on sample types and ethnicity also showed similar results, except for the plasma subgroup. There was also a significant association between peripheral CRP concentration and ASD after removing the studies identified by Galbraith plots. The results of the sensitivity analysis revealed that no single study could reverse our results. Meta-regression analyses revealed that the gender of autistic children had a moderating effect on the outcome of the meta-analysis. In addition, no obvious publication bias was found in the meta-analysis.
In our study, peripheral CRP levels were significantly elevated in autistic children compared with healthy children. These results may provide us some new insights about ASD.
